Pub Talk with Anna Doering: Art, Labor, & Liturgy

  • Full Pint Wild Side Pub 5310 Butler St. Pittsburgh, PA 15215 (map)

Pub Talks are back!! Join us at our September Pub Talk with Anna Doering, Managing Director of the Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka. The murals of Maxo Vanka, located in St. Nicholas Croatian Church in Millvale, are a one of a kind masterpiece. Vanka, a Croatian artist, painted the 25 murals in two intense periods in 1937 and 1941. They are unique, evocative, and larger-than-life representations of faith and family; the immigrant experience in America; social justice and injustice and the horrors of war.

The SPMMMV works to save, preserve, and share these murals. Anna Doering will share with us about the murals, the reality they depict, and we'll explore the ways that the liturgy of the church-- including its art-- shapes us to understand AND reflects the church's experience of injustice, oppression, the Christian story, and practices of faith.

The day before the Pub Talk (Saturday, 9/7), we'll be taking a tour of the Maxo Vanka murals. If you'd like to join the tour, sign up via our separate Facebook event.

About Pub Talks: We welcome a variety of speakers, artists, and musicians to explore the intersections of faith, culture, science, art, politics, and justice. We seek to draw on the best of public house history— a place to share a drink, build community, and discuss pressing issues of the day.

**Pub Talks are FREE and open to the public. We provide light appetizers. Drinks and other food can be purchased from Full Pint. We are so grateful for Full Pint’s hospitality, and encourage all Pub Talk attendees to make purchases and tip well.
