Dinner Church: Division & the Way of Jesus

  • Tree Pittsburgh 32 62nd Street Pittsburgh, PA, 15201 United States (map)

Dinner Church is a monthly gathering that is a creative and collaborative reshaping of church around the table.

What does that mean??
We come together to eat dinner and create a community of friends, strangers, and neighbors at Tree Pittsburgh. We spend time listening to Scripture together and exploring time through the church calendar in an approachable way. We experiment with singing and playing music together, having conversation about our questions and experience of God, and we pray through written liturgy and share our concerns, hopes, and joys as a community. Perhaps most importantly, we frame our time as Eucharist-- meeting Jesus at the Table of God's Kingdom with and through one another-- and we share in the Communion each month.

This month we will hear Jesus' words in Luke 12:49-56 that he did not come to bring peace on earth, but division. What about the Christmas Hallmark cards: Peace on earth and goodwill to all?? What do we do with a Jesus that does not seem to mind the presence of conflict and strife? When is division a necessary part of following the way of Jesus, and when is it caused by our egos, sin, and collective "othering" of people? We'll explore division and the Way of Jesus this month, and the way we navigate this present time of political and social division, which often is felt in our families, our friendships, and our daily life.

Dinner Church is all about collaboration as a community. Your voice, your ideas, your dreams and visions and gifts matter.
DM us if you're interested in collaborating in preparation for our June gathering!
